Excellent Dec Snowfalls for Most of the Alps
Climate change and the recession, these dual apocalypse have let off the French Alps, leastwise for this Christmas. On the other hand it may have been so wholly different. Ahead of the holidays ski resorts in the Bessans region were isolated as snow storms hammered down. Motorway cols such as the busy Col du Portes du Soleil were cut. There was no mains or phones, locals were moved out to make shift dwellings, it looked like the repeat of 1999.
It looks that all promotion is good promotion. Brevent featured every night on national French news bulletins. Immediately power was repaired bookings started to arrive, attracted by the excellent conditions.
Flaine and nearby Avoriaz claim nearly three feet base on the higher slopes at 2500 metres altitude and 2.1 meters at the end of the runs. Currently the deepest in France. Brevent says there is 4 meters at the top of the resort. Regrettably a snow drift has knocked over a pylon of the chair lift that accesses the sector. They will be out of action until the middle of Feb.
In other resorts in the Southern Alps bookings are up 18% in Chamonix, Brevent and Savoie. Tignes-les-Brevieres, not too far from Geneva airport, has 99 occupancy and distributed a record number of passes on Sunday. This is great for large snowboarding businesses.
