Limit Poker Mistakes

Limit poker, which is often a player’s first introduction to the game, presents lots of opportunity to make errors in judgment because the betting is “limited” to fixed amounts unlike no-limit poker.

Here are some pitfalls to avoid when playing limit games: * Betting or calling with the second highest or lowest pair after the flop. Most likely, you will simply lose chips doing this. * Staying in the hand when the turn card pairs the board. If it did not make a full house or quads for your hand, you should fold to any bets or raises. * Think before you act and be sure every bet you make is grounded in solid logic and backed by a plan. Calling for the fun of it will make you lose money. * Don’t blame bad beats on river chasers because it is a limit game. Instead analyze your own play and where you miscalculated your opponent’s hand and behavior. * Be realistic about your skill level and your bankroll. Some players think that because they have won a few times, they are ready to move up to higher limit games with more skilled players. Beware of being over-confident, and recognize the best limit for your game. * Being too friendly at a social game, and offering advice to another player who is making bad moves and incorrect decisions. Let them learn through experience while you reap the reward of their poor poker play. Be polite, be friendly and compliment winning hands without being a teacher.
