Mobile Broadband May Act as a Positive Force in the Global Economic Crisis
GSMA’s annual event, bringing together the senior executives from the global mobile industry, ended last week. The famous GSMA Leadership Summit was the primary event with CEOs from across the world coming together to discuss the main issues related to the industry. This year, the summit concluded with a statement that mobile broadband could act as a positive force in the ongoing global economic crisis, and could promote economic growth.
Although the private sector controls the mobile industry in most countries, support from the governments is needed to ensure that mobile broadband plays its desired role to help the economy. As of now, the two main things that the governments need to do are the release of a broadcast spectrum, and creating a strong platform for investments. Rob Conway, CEO and member of the GSMA board feels that governments should be more coordinated in releasing spectrum so that mobile device manufacturers do not have to struggle with different frequency ranges in different regions. A similar broadcast spectrum in different countries would help the manufacturers cut down on their costs as they can produce equipment, which can be easily used in networks of all countries, instead of having to customize their devices for different markets.
During the summit, it was also suggested that efforts should be made to take mobile broadband to a higher level through major investments in infrastructure, so that more jobs are created and the economy can be stimulated.
